There are many different reasons people choose to be a teaching assistant, but no matter what the reason, we are here to help and guide you through the process.

School Expectations of a Teacher Assistant

Schools rely on TAs to play a vital supporting role in the classroom. Expectations often include:

  • Professionalism: Arrive on time, dress appropriately, and maintain a positive and proactive attitude.
  • Pupil Support: Help pupils stay on task, particularly those with additional needs such as SEN, EAL, or behavioural challenges.
  • Adaptability: Be flexible when supporting across different year groups or with varied pupil needs.
  • Initiative: Step in when needed – whether helping a struggling pupil, prepping resources, or organising learning materials.
  • Behaviour Management: Support class behaviour policies and follow the teacher’s lead.
  • Confidentiality & Safeguarding: Maintain confidentiality and follow safeguarding policies at all times.
  • Team Player: Work collaboratively with teachers, other TAs, and support staff.

What is a Teacher Assistant?

A Teaching Assistant works closely with teachers to support the learning, development, and wellbeing of pupils – both in and outside the classroom. TAs may work 1:1 with children with additional needs or support the class as a whole.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting pupils’ learning during lessons
  • Helping prepare classroom materials and resources
  • Assisting with classroom management and behaviour
  • Working with children with SEN or EAL both in the mainstream classroom or within dedicated units where you may require to be a little more hands on eg: personal care
  • Delivering small group interventions or phonics/maths catch-ups

Teaching Assistants are essential to the smooth running of a classroom and are often the extra pair of eyes, ears, and hands that make a huge difference to both students and teachers.
